A few months ago, I was talking to a fellow patient about Asperger’s Syndrome. He asked whether Aspies are subject to contagious yawning. At the same time, my boyfriend and I always joke that we have empathy and are fake autistiics when we copy each other’s yawning – he copies mine far more often than I copy his. Now, it’s official: autistic children are not as likley to copy yawning as neurotypicals are. Of course, this further reinforces the empathy hypothesis of autism and provides insight into the social-communicative cues that we presumably miss. Yawn.

What planet are these people on? So I don’t yawn when other people do. That’s probably because I’m too busy soaking up their energy and emotions like a sponge.
The lack of empathy myth just burns me like nothing else. When are they going to hear us? We have an excess of perception and sensitivity, not a deficit. Anyone who thinks autistic people lack empathy needs to develop some, um, empathy.
But what do I know? I’m just autistic and therefore unqualified to speak on the matter.
Yeah, this one burnt my biscuits too. We don’t do “it”, or don’t do it the way “they” do, therefore we completely lack empathy. It’s such a joke.
Did they do the test with NT people yawning or other autistic people yawning? That could make a big difference.
Whenever I yawn my boyfriend yawns too. Hmm… we must be more “outliers”.
When someone yawn… I yawn too, this thing is not true for me!
(and the problem is, I hate when people are yawning)
But maybe if they did the test with me they would obtain the same results… because yawning is difficult to me, I have to be completely calm and not diturbed or I fail and don’t yawn…. maybe its because of that that I hate when people are yawning, because it makes me feel the need to yawn, but yawning is imposible to me if people are making noise.
Oh, and me too, I also hate this “Lack of empathy” theory, just plain wrong.
